How to Crack IBPS Common Written Exam (CWE) for PO
78IBPS Common Written Exam (CWE) is a huge opportunity for Indian students to get themselves placed in a nationalized bank. As we know, the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) has asked IBPS to organize a Common Written Exam for Probationary Officers and Management Trainees for all 19 Nationalized Banks. State Bank of India with its associates banks are not participating in this exercise.

Understanding the Cut-Off
The IBPS Common Written Exam will be held twice a year. The IBPS will issue a score card to all successful candidates. This score card will be valid for one year. Various banks will issue their own notifications for PO and they will use this score card for screening purpose. The score card will be issued only to those candidates who will cross the minimum qualifying marks. The IBPS has declared the formula for Minimum Qualifying Marks.
Formula:
The IBPS will use Linear Conversion Method to convert the score of each candidate (after factoring with negative marks, if any) into a standardized score. Each candidate will have to cross a minimum standardized score to be eligible for participation in the recruitment process of any banks - to be eligible to get a score card. The formula for Cut Off will be as follows.
Average – ¼ standard deviation for General Category
Average – ¾ standard deviation for Reserved Category
As we can see, the need of the hour is to prepare in a balanced manner. Aspirants should not underestimate any area and they should keep a special eye on General Awareness Section, as this is the section which seems to be detrimental to most ‘bright candidates’ in previous PO exams.
Getting Real
The Common Written Exam will contain two sections.
1. Objective:
Objective tests will comprise of five sections with composite time of 150 minutes. Students will be tested for Reasoning, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude, General Awareness, and Computer Knowledge. There will be 50 questions in all sections, however, Maximum Marks in English is only 25, while an aspirant can get Maximum mark of 50 in other four sections - in other fours sections the Maximum Marks is 50.
2. Descriptive:
There will also be a descriptive paper on English Composition with Maximum marks of 25. Note, the descriptive paper of a student will not be checked unless he has scored minimum qualifying marks in Objective tests. It means to say that the Cut off will be decided on the basis of Objective test.

Now, what should be strategy to crack this Common Written Exam? First of all, see the sections and its weight and apply proper strategy to deal with it. Keep Reasoning and Quantitative Aptitude in one bracket and try to attack these two sections simultaneously. Practice a lot, but don’t keep yourself pinned on too many short-cut methods. Remember, with negative marking there, too much short cut won't help you much, unless you have practiced on those methods in an exhaustive manner. Practice, Practice, and Practice. That is the ONLY PERFECT way to deal with these two sections.
English should be taken with a bit playfully. If you have done your homework on English Grammar, then you should expect to score handsomely in this 25 marks section.
IBPS has mentioned that there will be a special emphasis on Indian Banking Industry for General Awareness Questions. What should you do? Well, scan banking news of last six months. Scratch a bit and see other related news about those news of last six months. Try to make a list of RBI’s announcement during last six months. If you have access of any competitive magazines then see those sections. If not, then ask your friends to weed out related stuffs from the archive of The Economic Times.
Getting OK with Computer Knowledge is not easy for those students who don’t have any exposure in technical areas. However, I would suggest, again, scanning related news (Computer and Internet) of last six months. After getting facts before you try to find the meaning of related terms. That will certainly help you. Ask your teacher and friends about the meaning of those terms as finding yourself - if you are not tech savvy- will be a bit cumbersome.

R Gupta's and Upkar's bank PO exam books will really come handy for IBPS CWE exam. Actually since this exam is starting from this year only, I don't think any of the leading publishing houses of competitive exam books like RPH or Upkar or Arihant has yet published any specific book on IBPS CWE. However you can still do well with the bank PO exam books from these publishers, which are easily available in the market. The number of candidates appearing in this test is huge. In 2009, SBI had conducted exam for Clerk in which 34 lakhs students had applied and SBI had to arrange exams in six days having 2 sitting per day. Same is the case with IBPS. Though, the exam is conducted on the same day, but due to large no. of applicants, they are arranging two sittings. Questions will be different for both sittings. There will be standard moderation. Don't worry. Prepare well. Good Luck.

Read two editorials TODAY. and, respond me whether you can stand tall against the motto of those two editorials or not. If yes, don't worry. If no, do something quickly. English and GS should be the quickest section to get through. Don't find yourself in any sort of trouble in these two sections. Descriptive and Objective papers will be different. Smile, laugh, live. @Aman: Prepare well, score will follow you. Don't under estimate the banking related news since last six months. Good Luck.
@Krishna: cut off will depend on your competitor. And, remember, there is nothing like cut-off. There will be a score card showing your performance. Cut off will be decided by banks according to their requirement.
@Sabari: Yeah, each section will have its own cut-off marks........ and, again cut off doesn't matter - score matters. Keep your preparation balanced as after the result every bank will have its own criteria to select candidates.
@J.P. Khanduri: Current Affairs will definitely show its importance. However, as specifically asked in the advertisement of IBPS, you need to give more, more, and more importance to banking news. Banking news preparation should be fool proof as 90% marks in General Awareness section will be from that section. Good Luck.

@prasanti: That is simple. Average out the category wise marks and calculate the standard deviation for each student. A bit of statistical formula is involved here in the calculation of standard deviation. The value of standard deviation will make or break your score-card.
That should not be your problem. Prepare holistically. don't leave any sections.
Once you get a good score card, all you will require is to participate in the interviews of various banks.
